Is Buffalo Sauce Ketogenic?

Keto is an abbreviation for “ketosis,” which is a state of being ketogenic or eating a low-carb diet. The term is often associated with the Atkins Diet, which involves a strict intake of protein and fats.

Buffalo sauce contains no carbs, so it is technically ketogenic. However, no studies support the theory that consuming ketogenic foods will make you lose weight.

Buffalo sauce is also full of salt. Sodium is an electrolyte that carries a charge within the body. Your body needs to maintain a constant electrical charge. When sodium levels are too low, the body will begin to flush it from the cells, causing swelling and other symptoms. In the case of someone with diabetes, this could mean a dangerous spike in blood sugar.

Buffalo sauce is also full of natural sugars. A teaspoon of the sauce contains 7.5 grams of natural sugar. The label on the bottle doesn’t say whether the sauce has been fermented or not, but it’s safe to assume it has been.

If you’re trying to cut down on sugar and reduce your risk of diabetes, it’s better to stick with products that are lower in natural sugars.
